We’ve just been to church, and now we all know what you were trying to tell me!”
Still knocking, Lucy was suddenly aware of the beautiful singing that she had heard earlier. At that, she stopped knocking and really began to take notice of her surroundings. The same house where she had visited the old woman now had boards over the windows and broken planks on the porch. As she was staring in wide-eyed wonderment, Lucy heard a familiar voice.
“I’m going back to my family now, but always remember that Jesus loves you!” It was the tender voice of the old woman.
“Lucy, what are you doing up there?” Her father’s voice was almost frantic, “come down quickly before you get hurt!”
At that same moment, the town clock struck midnight. Lucy almost didn’t hear her father calling.
“It’s getting late, now come down.” There was no mistaking the tone of his voice that usually made Lucy snap to attention. This time was different though. Lucy still had to tell her parents about the rest of her miracle, and the excitement that she felt made her go on.
“But this is where I talked to the old woman” Lucy managed to say.
“Honey, no one lives here.” Her father’s voice began to change as he continued. “No one has lived here for years. Why this house is in such bad shape that it’s going to be torn down. See, the sign over there says Condemned.”
Lucy looked in the direction that her father was pointing, but she didn’t even notice the sign. All that she could focus her attention on was a sled – a brand new sled – with a Bible on top of it. All at once she truly understood.
“Mom, Dad, don’t you see? That wasn’t an old woman I talked to in this house. She was an angel. She’s gone back to her heavenly home now, but before she left she told me to always remember that Jesus loves me! He loves us all!” Lucy’s voice had so much excitement in it that all her parents could do was to stare at her in amazement.
She began again. “We are just like this old house before we know Jesus. We are condemned. Then, after we have met Jesus and let him in, then we become brand new…just like this sled!”
The same old sled with the peeling paint that Lucy had once complained so about was now a transformation of beauty. It was fresh and new – exactly what she had longed for.
Lucy bent down in awe and picked up the Bible that lay on top of the new sled, and held it up in the air as she said, “And it’s all in here!”
